Canine anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair surgery first begins with an orthopedic consultation with Dr. Thibaudeau. The purpose of this examination is to determine the dog's knee injury status, and to meet with the pet owner. At My Pet's Veterinary Center, it is our priority to ensure that pet owners fully understand all options available and the benefits and drawbacks of each approach.
If ACL surgical correction is opted for, Dr. Thibaudea udiscusses various techniques available. Depending on your dog')s size and characteristics, we can discuss which technique will be more appropriate for your dog. Owners are informed on their first visit on what will happen before, during and after surgery. Rehabilitation after surgery is a very important part of the healing process and many options are also available: in home rehabilitation performed by the owners, at our center for laser therapy or at afull rehabilitation facility.
If conservative treatment for ACL injury is opted for, then a wide array of treatments can be suggested: from laser therapy and rehabilitation, to anti-inflammatory medications, joint protection injections and joint enhancing diets.
Owners are sent home with handouts about ACL injuries and care to help them make the best decision for their dog's healthcare.
